Where it is
Cugn is a high alpine launch at 2,177 m in the mountains above the Lake Como area, facing east through southwest — best known as an excellent autumn hike-and-fly site, when the lake's Breva breeze is at its weakest. In summer that same breeze can build to around 40 km/h from roughly midday, so most pilots plan around the cooler, calmer autumn window instead of fighting the afternoon wind. Take-off faces east toward Gravedona, and the site opens up genuine cross-country terrain, with route options running toward San Bernardino, Chiavenna, Poschiavo, Sondrio and Bormio. Access is by private car, with temporary parking near Alpe Cadinèllo or Cadolcia, followed by about 1 hour 15 minutes on foot up to the launch. No particular flight restrictions apply here — the main thing to plan around is the timing of the lake breeze rather than any rule.
Launch & conditions
Take-off faces east, toward Gravedona. Best flown in autumn, when the lake breeze is weaker — a good hike-and-fly option that season.
Getting there & local rules
Reached by private car from Roveredo, with temporary parking at Alpe Cadinèllo or in Cadolcia; from Cadinèllo it's roughly 1 hour 15 minutes on foot to the launch. Possible flight routes head toward Roveredo or Gravedona, with cross-country lines running toward San Bernardino, Chiavenna, Poschiavo, Sondrio and Bormio.
Local rules & hazards
No particular flight restrictions apply here, but keep an eye on Lake Como's Breva breeze — in summer it can build to around 40 km/h from about midday onward, so it's best flown as a morning or autumn site rather than a summer afternoon one.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Cugn, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Cugn with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
