Where it is

Sant'Oreste is a small, rough hilltop launch north of Rome — a SW-facing takeoff for medium-skill pilots, grassy but littered with rocks. It works best in a steady 15–20 km/h SW wind. Late spring and late summer are the sweet spots, particularly for sunset dynamic soaring; mid-day thermals work well for XC out to the north-east. The site is looked after informally by a handful of local pilots who maintain the windsock and cut the grass roughly once a year at the end of spring — don't expect a curated field. Access is a 40-minute uphill walk from the nearest parking.

Launch & conditions

Small SW-facing takeoff, grassy but full of rocks. Best in steady 15–20 km/h SW winds. Medium-skill pilots. Generally unused in late autumn and winter; best in late spring and late summer.

Getting there & local rules

40-minute uphill walk from one of the access parkings. The windsock is maintained informally by local pilots; grass cutting happens roughly once a year at the end of spring, not a strict schedule.

Local rules & hazards

Medium-skill pilot site. Sunset flights in dynamic breeze are the local highlight; mid-day thermal flights point out to the NE for cross-country.

A day counts as flyable when the surface wind held in your range, from a direction the site flies, with no rain, for at least 2 hours in a row (08:00–20:00) — from hourly 10 m wind over the last 12 months. A seasonal wind guide only: it can't judge gusts, thermals or turbulence, and never replaces the live forecast, airspace checks and your own judgement.
