Where it is

Monte Piana launches from above Rifugio Bosi in the Dolomites near Misurina, Veneto, at a lofty 2,249 m facing east through southwest. This is a launch that punishes inexperience: pilots without solid take-off skill should only launch here with at least 5–10 km/h of south or southeast wind, because without it the flat run and uneven ground can turn into a serious problem fast. Landing is on the large meadows around Misurina. Getting to launch means either hiking up or catching the seasonal shuttle from Misurina, which runs roughly July through October between 09:00 and 17:00 — a useful shortcut for pilots who'd rather save their legs for the flight. With its high altitude and the technical nature of the take-off, this is one for pilots who already have their launch technique dialed in rather than a first-timer's site.

Launch & conditions

Above Rifugio Bosi. If your take-off technique isn't solid, only launch with at least 5–10 km/h of south or southeast wind — without it, the flat run and uneven ground can cause serious problems.

Getting there & local rules

Reach launch on foot, or by the seasonal shuttle from Misurina (roughly July–October, 09:00–17:00).

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Monte Piana, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Monte Piana with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
