Where it is
Tirhmi sits on a mountain ridge north of its namesake town in southern Morocco, between Tiznit and Tafraoute, facing roughly south with some launch options leaning more southwest. Ridge soaring works here in the right wind, but the site really comes alive with thermal flying over the valley once the afternoon heat gets going, and on hot days a return flow can develop over the valley in the late afternoon. The main takeoff sits about 100 m east of a track junction near the top of the ridge, close to a mast visible from town, with a few alternative launch spots nearby. Reaching it means turning off the main Tiznit-Tafraoute road at a white concrete marker on the east side of Tirhmi, then following a steep, unpaved track up the ridge — manageable in a two-wheel-drive car with reasonable ground clearance and a light load, but not easy in every vehicle. Budget about 45 minutes driving from Tiznit to Tirhmi and another 20 minutes up the track to launch. Once thermals start working, wind direction on the ridge can shift quickly, so stay alert to that right through the launch.
Launch & conditions
The main takeoff is about 100 m east of the track junction near the ridge top, close to a mast visible from town; a few alternative launch spots exist nearby.
Getting there & local rules
Turn off the Tiznit-Tafraoute road at a white concrete marker on the east side of Tirhmi, then follow the steep unpaved track up the ridge — a two-wheel-drive car with good clearance and a light load can usually manage it. About 45 minutes from Tiznit to town, then another 20 minutes up the track.
Local rules & hazards
Once thermals start working, wind direction on the ridge can shift quickly — stay alert to this through the launch. Thermals typically kick in during the afternoon, with a return flow sometimes developing over the valley in the late afternoon on hot days.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Tirhmi, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Tirhmi with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
