Where it is
Cantamar is an unofficial but locally welcomed soaring site on Mexico's Baja California coast, launching from just 43 m in west or northwest wind off a coastal dune. Takeoff is from the southwest end of the dune when the wind is northwest, or from the south end or the ridge north of the dune when it runs west — the exact spot depends on exactly how the wind is set up that day. It works as a solid backup to the better-known La Salinas site when conditions there are too strong or too far north, giving pilots another option on days that would otherwise be grounded. The dune is visible right from the highway — take the Cantamar exit and look for it, or simply ask locally where the dune buggies ride, since that's the same stretch of sand. This is a low-altitude, wind-dependent site: it only really works once conditions are genuinely strong, and that same strength is what makes ground-handling skill matter here more than at a typical mellow soaring spot.
Launch & conditions
Takeoff is the southwest end of the dune in northwest wind, or the south end or ridge to the north of the dune in west wind — the spot depends on the day's wind direction.
Getting there & local rules
The dune is visible from the highway; take the Cantamar exit and look for it, or ask locally where the dune buggies ride.
Local rules & hazards
Watch for low-flying dune buggies and quads, sometimes driven fast across the dunes. Because the site needs genuinely strong wind to work, there's real risk of being blown back over the drop-off on the dune's east side — solid ground-handling skills are recommended before flying here.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Cantamar, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Cantamar with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
