Chalchihuapan launches from a south-facing saddle at 2,336 m in Puebla state, central Mexico, about 350 m above the valley floor, and flies with wind from the southeast through south and southwest to west. Midday thermals work here year-round, though cloudbase runs low and afternoon overdevelopment with storms is common from May through September, so summer flying needs an early, cautious approach. Conditions dry out from October, and the best window for strong thermals and genuine cross-country flying is November through February, even though cross-country conditions here are generally inconsistent rather than reliable day to day. Late-afternoon ridge soaring, by contrast, is a solid bet almost any time of year. Getting to launch is flexible: drive from the town of Chalchihuapan just north of the site, park at the landing zone and take a moto-taxi up, or hike the whole way if you'd rather walk. No specific flight rules apply, but locals are worth talking to before you fly, both for current conditions and for a lift if you need one.
