Where it is

ThermalsCross-country

Tepoztlán launches from San Juan Tlacotenco, about an hour's drive south of Mexico City by bus or rental car, with a south-facing takeoff roughly 700 m above the landing field. Morning is the safer window here — launch before 11am to avoid the strong, often rough thermal activity that builds through the day, especially in summer, or wait until after 4pm once the stronger winds have died down. Reading wind direction matters before you commit to launching: fly it wrong and you can end up on the lee side, where rotor forms. The scenery is part of the draw — dramatic rock formations, the valley opening up below, and on a clear day the distant silhouettes of the Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl volcanoes. Landing is beside the football field in Santo Domingo, Tepoztlán, with approach and landing typically from the east through southeast; power lines and houses surround the field, so plan the approach carefully, and expect pockets of lift on the way in that can mean spending longer over the LZ than you'd expect before losing altitude.

Launch & conditions

South-facing takeoff about 700 m above the landing field; launch before 11am or after 4pm to avoid the roughest midday thermal activity, especially in summer.

Getting there & local rules

About an hour's drive south of Mexico City, by bus or rental car, to the launch above San Juan Tlacotenco.

Local rules & hazards

Read the wind direction carefully before launching — getting it wrong can put you on the lee side, where rotor forms. The landing field beside the football field in Santo Domingo has power lines and houses close around it, so plan the approach with those in mind.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Tepoztlan, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Tepoztlan with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
