Where it is

ThermalsCross-country

Chupuro is a high-altitude thermal and cross-country site in Peru's central highlands, launching from roughly 3,900 m in east to southeast wind. It's set in a wide, open valley and the takeoff itself is straightforward — a genuine plus at this altitude, where thin air and strong lift can otherwise make getting airborne harder work. The flying season runs from May to September, when the sky is typically clear and stable thermals of 4 to 6 m/s or more are common, giving good height gain for cross-country flights along the valley. Landing is on a wide, obstacle-free area next to a river at around 3,200 m, roughly 700 m below launch — plenty of room and no hazards reported. Between the easy launch, dependable thermals and a clean landing zone, Chupuro is a solid Andean valley site for pilots comfortable flying at altitude.

Launch & conditions

Launch sits at about 3,900 m in a wide valley and take-off is described as straightforward; expect thin, high-altitude air even so.

Local rules & hazards

Fly Chupuro between May and September, when conditions are typically clear with stable but strong thermals of 4-6 m/s or more — be ready for punchy lift at this altitude.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Chupuro, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Chupuro with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
