Balsamar

Balsamar is a coastal launch on the Pacific side of El Salvador, in a region better known for its world-class surf. Take-off sits above the coast at 170 m and looks straight out at the ocean — an easy, roomy field ideal for both paragliders and hang gliders, with good access road right up to launch and a solid top-landing option. Excellent for ridge soaring in 12+ km/h winds and, on light-wind days, a mellow top-to-bottom for beginners. There's a house thermal to the left of launch, and the setup makes for great tandem flights. Flyable year-round (dry season Nov–May, rain in the wet season tends to fall at night); the main watch-out is 2–4 day episodes of strong north wind especially between November and February, though south winds can still sneak in because the launch sits right on the coast.

Launch & conditions

Very easy takeoff at 170 m ASL (13°30'1.06''N; 89°32'7.02''W) with 180° potential if improved further, ideal for PG and HG. Great top-landing field. Excellent ridge soaring in 12+ km/h; sled rides for beginners in light wind; house thermal to the left of launch; ideal for tandems.

Getting there & local rules

From San Salvador, take the main road to La Libertad (km 33). At La Libertad, right onto the coastal highway west. After La Perla (km 65), take a dirt road on your right 50 m before tunnel 4 — about a 5-minute drive up to the phone tower. Launch is the field across the road. About 20 minutes from El Tunco and 1 hour from San Salvador.

Local rules & hazards

The takeoff is managed by the local flying club — please coordinate with them before flying. Landings: both CDI (Balsamar) and Izcacuyo beaches only work when the tide is at least halfway out — always check tides. Izcacuyo is shorter and more technical but closer to launch if you lose height early. Both landings are privately owned; contact the club to ensure a smooth experience. Tropical conditions — no flight suits needed.
