Where it is
K 51 is a beginner-friendly ridge site in a scenic valley in central El Salvador, with big views of the surrounding hills and the San Vicente volcano. The launch is wide, grassy and easy — a well-known spot for student pilots working top-to-bottom flights in light wind, for tandem operations, and for ground-handling practice, with a good access road running right up to it. It also works as a proper thermic site: this valley is among the most sun-exposed in the country, so thermals build strong around midday. Conditions are tropical, so no cold-weather flying gear is needed. The site is flyable year-round — the dry season (November–May) brings occasional strong north winds in short 2–4 day spells, especially November through February, while southeasterly wind dominates through the rainy season from June to November. Landing is down by the river, reached by a short dirt-road drive; a high-clearance vehicle makes retrieving pilots easier.
Launch & conditions
Launch is wide, grassy and very easy, with a good access road running right up to it — ideal for light-wind top-to-bottom student flights, tandem operations and ground handling, though thermals build strong around midday.
Getting there & local rules
From San Salvador, take the Pan-American Highway east toward San Vicente; at kilometer 51 turn right toward Tepetitan, and about 200 m after the turn look for a water tank on the left — the dirt-road entrance to the hill is right there. About an hour's drive total.
Local rules & hazards
Conditions are tropical year-round, so no cold-weather gear is needed, though thermals strengthen noticeably around midday and the November–February dry season can bring short 2–4 day spells of strong north wind.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to k 51, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open k 51 with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
