Where it is

ThermalsSoaringHike & fly

Panajachel launches from 2,064 m above Lake Atitlán in Guatemala, with flights routinely running an hour or more and up to three hours on a strong day — genuinely long airtime for a site this accessible. It has a reputation among acro pilots: the classic line here is climbing high, working some maneuvers out over the lake, then flying back to the ridge to climb out again and repeat. The main takeoff sits above the town of Santa Catarina, about 2 km south of Panajachel itself; a taxi to launch runs roughly $5–7, plus a $2 launch fee paid at the seminary on top of that. Ridge soaring right beside the lake produces glassy, smooth conditions, though pilots should watch for strong cloud suck developing over the ridge on active days. A second launch exists at the Mirador north of town, reachable by bus for about $1, giving a lower-key alternative to the main site. Getting to either launch is easiest by bus or shuttle from town. Wind needs to be from the south or southwest for the site to fly safely, and landing is either in the dry riverbed or near a hotel close to the entrance of town.

This is rated a P3 site, meaning it calls for an intermediate rating — it's not a beginner's mountain. Wind must be from the south or southwest to fly it safely, and pilots should watch for strong cloud suck over the ridge on active days.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Panajachel, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Panajachel with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
