Where it is
Kocatepe, above the bay of Ören near Bodrum on Turkey's Aegean coast, launches from a striking 640 m rock face and is built to handle everyone from complete beginners to professional pilots — it's a well-regarded venue for acrobatic flying and SIV courses alike, with small hotels nearby that make it easy to turn a flying trip into a short family holiday. Two takeoffs, built in the 1996/97 season, launch toward the south and southwest, and the drive up from the beach takes only about 25 minutes on paved road that any ordinary car can manage. The wind window that actually works here is narrower than the takeoff orientation suggests: pilots should only fly in south or soft southeast wind, and southwest or west wind is explicitly unsafe to fly here. The site is considered flyable year-round, with the best conditions generally building between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Landing is about as easy as it gets: there's plenty of open space to come down, and most pilots simply land on the beach.
