Where it is
Gösseck launches from around 2,200 m in Austria after a substantial 2.5-hour hike up from the mountain — the landing sits roughly 1,400 m below, so this is a serious hike-and-fly rather than a drive-to-the-top site. Access starts by car at the 'Seiz' parking area on the mountain. Once airborne, the site opens up in northeast, east, southeast and south winds and is well regarded for thermals, cross-country flying, hike-and-fly trips and flatland-style approaches depending on the day. One restriction worth knowing before you go: flying in the direction of Leoben is described as forbidden, so plan your line to stay clear of that airspace rather than drifting toward it. Locals are clear that the effort pays off — it's called out as a genuinely beautiful mountain — but the long approach and the 1,400 m of relief mean it suits pilots who are comfortable with a demanding hike and a big, committing flight rather than a short after-work outing.

Local rules & hazards

Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Gösseck, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Gösseck with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
