Where it is

ThermalsCross-country

Grosse Asitzkopf launches from 1,772 m in the Austrian Alps on a grass-covered slope, and works as a strong crossing point for cross-country flights: from here pilots can push across the Leogang valley and connect onto the Leogangerstein massif rock face, and from there onward to the Loferer Stein massif — the flying over these ranges is genuinely impressive. In winter, reach launch by cable car from either the Saalbach or Leogang side; in summer, take the cable car up to Hütten and finish with about a 20-minute hike. One airspace note matters here: the site sits near LO D 22 Hochfilzen, a military training area using live ammunition that runs from ground level up to 4,267 m MSL. Flying through it is legally permitted, but pilots should treat that fact with real caution rather than complacency. Expect the usual high-Alpine hazards too — Föhn, thunderstorms and valley winds — and always check the forecast before committing to the crossing.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Grosse Asitzkopf, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch.
