Dawson – Dome

The Dome rises straight out of Dawson City, and its main south-facing launch sits at the end of a road you can drive to the top of — rare for a site that opens onto thermals, ridge soaring and cross-country all at once. A second launch on the north side is a five-minute walk from the parking area and is kept for more experienced pilots. What brings visitors here is as much the calendar as the air: launching around midnight at the summer solstice is a local tradition, and the town's film festival in April and music festival in July are worth building a trip around. This is a locally regulated site with a strict power-line rule over the landing field beside the Yukon River, so it is the kind of place to arrive early, find the pilots who fly it regularly, and go through the approach with them before launching.

Launch & conditions

The primary launch is the south-facing slope at the top of the Dome, reached by driving to the end of the road. The north launch is a separate spot about five minutes on foot from the parking area, down a path heading northwest past the lookout gazebo, and is recommended for more advanced pilots only.

Take the Dawson City Dome road to the top. The south launch is at the end of the road; the north launch is a short walk down the path beside the lookout gazebo.

Local rules & hazards

City bylaw requires pilots to clear the power lines at the landing field by at least 500 ft (150 m), and the rule is taken seriously — plan to be at least 500 ft over town before setting up final. The only suitable landing is the grass strip by the Yukon River, with power lines on the town side and the river on the other. Visiting pilots are asked to check in with local pilots first, as the site's access rests on a long-standing relationship with the town.
