Where it is

ThermalsSoaringCross-countryHike & fly

Eagle Summit is a remote high-country flying site in Alaska's Interior, reached via the Steese Highway roughly 104 miles north of Fairbanks toward the small town of Circle. Above the tree line, the terrain opens into a broad expanse of low tundra vegetation with several distinct launches and landing zones, so there's genuine choice in wind direction once you're up there — this is a ridge-soaring and thermal site depending on conditions. It's also genuinely wild: there are no services nearby, weather can turn cold even in July with snow lingering on north-facing slopes, and help is far away. Pilots fly this one prepared — warm layers regardless of season, food and water for a full day, and someone back home who knows the plan. A dirt road climbs from the highway parking area to the main launch (a 4x4 helps), or you can hike up via a trail from the lower parking area instead. Some launches have sharp exposed rock, so check your wing carefully while laying out.

Launch & conditions

Above the tree line, several launches and landing zones spread across low tundra terrain, giving flexibility across wind directions — but watch for sharp exposed rock at some of them.

Getting there & local rules

From the Steese Highway, park at the pullout around mile 104 and either drive the dirt road up (4x4 recommended) or hike the trail from the lower parking area to reach the main launch.

Local rules & hazards

Strong, changeable wind is possible at this remote site. There is no cell coverage or nearby help, so treat any local advice on current conditions as valuable and always have a backup plan.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Eagle Summit, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Eagle Summit with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
