Where it is

ThermalsCross-country

Braunwald 'Kiosk' launches at 1,245 m in the Glarus Alps, just a two-minute walk from the Braunwald cable car station — one of the most convenient thermal and cross-country launches in the area, since Braunwald itself is a car-free resort village reached only by cable railway. The takeoff faces southeast and works well for building height on thermic days. The one condition to watch for is the valley wind: when it picks up, launching here can put you straight into a rotor, and Gumengrat is the better alternative launch on those days. A wildlife protection area sits on the opposite side of the valley and should be avoided in flight. Switzerland's airspace is genuinely complex around here, so check current airspace and active danger areas before flying rather than assuming. Landing is on a large meadow right next to the cable car and railway station, which keeps the walk back to the village short.

Launch & conditions

Faces southeast, two minutes from the Braunwald cable car station. When the valley wind strengthens, launching here risks a rotor — Gumengrat is a better alternative on those days.

Getting there & local rules

Reached by the Braunwald cable railway; the village itself is car-free.

Local rules & hazards

A wildlife protection area lies on the opposite side of the valley and should not be overflown. Föhn and valley-wind effects are a factor here — check current Swiss airspace and active danger areas before flying.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Braunwald 'Kiosk', read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch.
