Where it is
Hoch-Ybrig is a mountain flying area in the Schwyz Alps of central Switzerland, launching from around 1,813 m near the Sternen sector of the ski resort above Weglosen. The site favors wind out of the north, northeast or northwest, and the terrain opens up thermic and soaring flying with room to head out cross-country on a good day. A two-stage cable car reaches the upper mountain on an affordable day ticket, which makes the launch easy to get to without a long hike, and it's also reachable by car via the Schindellegi exit or by train to Einsiedeln with a connecting bus. The valley below sits inside Swiss airspace that pilots need to check before flying, since restrictions and active danger areas change and are not something to guess at. A speed-flying and speed-riding line exists here too, but it runs under a stricter rule than ordinary paragliding: newcomers to that discipline need a proper introduction from a local instructor first, not a self-taught attempt. Landing is at the valley station in Weglosen, close to the cable car for an easy pack-up. Watch the cable car lines near the launch signage before committing to your run.
Launch & conditions
Launch from the Kleiner Sternen area; check for cables near the signage before your run-up.
Getting there & local rules
Two-stage cable car with an affordable day pass reaches the upper mountain. By road, take the Schindellegi highway exit and follow signs for Hoch-Ybrig/Weglosen. By public transport, take the train to Einsiedeln and connect to the bus for Weglosen.
Local rules & hazards
South föhn conditions bring downwind flow with west winds, so treat southerly föhn days with caution. Speed-flying and speed-riding at this site are only permitted after a proper introduction from a local instructor — this is not something to attempt untaught.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Hoch – Ybrig, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Hoch – Ybrig with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
