ThermalsSoaringHike & fly

Rotenflue, in the Mythen region of central Switzerland, is a versatile thermal and soaring site with multiple launch options, including a ramp built for hang gliders. Access is by gondola straight up from the valley, making it an easy site to reach without a long hike, though walking up is also an option if you'd rather earn the flight. There's a firm ceiling to know before you go: maximum flying height is 2,750 m here, so this isn't a site for pushing high above the terrain. Landing is close and convenient — a large meadow just a few minutes' walk from the gondola station — but posted regulations at both launch and landing are worth reading properly rather than skimming, since local rules apply at each. Föhn is a regular factor in this part of Switzerland, so check conditions carefully before committing to a flight.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Rotenflue, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Rotenflue with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
