Where it is

Soaring

Kerenzerberg launches northwest-facing at 671 m above the Walensee in eastern Switzerland, known locally as a reliable soaring site. Model aircraft also fly this hill, so expect to share the air and stay alert on final approach and glide. Reach the launch on foot: from Näfels train station, take a bus (or drive) to the Chapellenstutz stop, then follow the Hansaweg path toward Filzbach — the marked track leads directly past takeoff, and pilots should stick to the signposted paths rather than cutting across open ground. A windsock is mounted at launch. The site sits close to Mollis airfield, so special local airspace rules apply — check the notice posted at launch before flying — and Swiss airspace generally is complex enough that it is worth getting properly briefed before any flight here. Föhn wind affects this area strongly and can turn calm conditions dangerous fast, so treat any Föhn forecast with real caution.

Northwest-facing soaring site at 671 m; use only the signposted access tracks to reach launch, and watch for model aircraft sharing the airspace. A windsock is mounted on site.

Getting there & local rules

From Näfels train station, take the bus (or drive) to the Chapellenstutz stop, then follow the Hansaweg path toward Filzbach — it leads directly past the launch.

Local rules & hazards

Kerenzerberg sits near Mollis airfield, so special local airspace rules apply — check the notice posted at launch before flying. Swiss airspace here is genuinely complex, so get properly briefed beforehand. Föhn wind is a serious hazard in this area and can change conditions quickly, so treat any Föhn forecast with real caution and be ready to stand down.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Kerenzerberg, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Kerenzerberg with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
