Where it is

ThermalsSoaring

Iquique – Alto Hospicio is a launch above the Chilean desert coast near Iquique, at 506 m, flying with southwest, west and northwest wind for thermal and soaring conditions — in the years before it closed. The take-off area was large, with car parking right at the top of the mountain and an easy launch; around 2015 it was even upgraded with artificial grass, toilets and shade structures. As of the most recent report, the site is marked closed, so flying here needs confirming rather than assumed before any trip. In its open years it was reachable by public bus straight from Iquique, and pilots valued it as a good place to build early thermal experience, though the surrounding desert terrain means sand gets into everything. Two rules always applied here regardless of status: never fly with a north wind, and stand down if you see waves breaking offshore — locals treated that as the clearest sign conditions had turned dangerous. Given its closed status, verify current access before planning a visit rather than showing up unannounced.
