Where it is

Soaring

Palo Buque is a coastal soaring site just south of Iquique, Chile, launching from a modest 217 m with wind from the southeast through south, southwest and west — a site built for soaring rather than thermic cross-country flying, working the sand dunes and coastal ridge right down near sea level. Takeoff is from a small dune close to the water, which makes it approachable for pilots working on their soaring skills, while more experienced flyers can climb back up the higher ground behind it, get up over the mountain, and head out along the ridge for a longer run. From Iquique, the site is reached by heading south and turning off onto a small trail — it's about 15 km from the city, an easy afternoon trip rather than a full expedition. The best window is in the afternoon, roughly three to four hours before sunset, when wind is strong through the day and gradually eases, leaving hours of playable soaring along the dune and ridge line before the light goes.

Local rules & hazards
