El calenton

El Calentón is a thermal, soaring and cross-country site near Santa Fe de Antioquia, Colombia, launching at about 1,435 m in east, southeast or south wind. Getting to launch is a short hike of about five minutes from the main road, making access reasonably easy. There's no official landing zone in the Santa Fe area — pilots work with informal 'option' landings rather than a marked LZ, and the one commonly used, while not official, does the job; it's not an easy one, though, with power lines and a fence to watch for and avoid on approach. Timing matters here too: after around 13:00, the local 'Pacífico' wind pattern can make launching impossible, so morning and early-afternoon windows are the more reliable ones.
