El Calentón is a thermal, soaring and cross-country site near Santa Fe de Antioquia, Colombia, launching at about 1,435 m in east, southeast or south wind. Getting to launch is a short hike of about five minutes from the main road, making access reasonably easy. There's no official landing zone in the Santa Fe area — pilots work with informal 'option' landings rather than a marked LZ, and the one commonly used, while not official, does the job; it's not an easy one, though, with power lines and a fence to watch for and avoid on approach. Timing matters here too: after around 13:00, the local 'Pacífico' wind pattern can make launching impossible, so morning and early-afternoon windows are the more reliable ones. Between the informal landing and the early cutoff on launchable time, El Calentón rewards planning your flight for earlier in the day and staying alert on final approach.
