Where it is
Fredonia offers some of the better cross-country potential in this part of Colombia when the weather cooperates — the open valley here makes long-distance flights genuinely achievable rather than aspirational, launching from 1,852 m in southwest, west or northwest wind. The main takeoff is quite flat, so the trick is waiting for a proper gust of wind rather than trying to force a launch in weak conditions; right next to that field is a steeper slope where taking off is possible even when the wind is light, giving pilots a fallback option. Getting there from Medellín is straightforward by bus, and the site pairs well with a nearby destination — after landing, pilots can catch a bus onward to Jérico for a second flight, then head back to Medellín from the landing zone there, turning one trip into two flying days. Landing at Fredonia itself is near the Cauca River at Puente Iglesias, conveniently right on the road back up to launch.
Launch & conditions
The main takeoff is quite flat — wait for a proper gust to launch. A steeper field right next to it allows takeoff even in light wind.
Getting there & local rules
Reachable by bus from Medellín; after flying, a bus onward to Jérico allows a second flight before heading back to Medellín.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Fredonia, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Fredonia with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
