Where it is

ThermalsCross-country

Otivar launches from around 893 m in Spain's Costa Tropical, in the hills above Granada province near Almuñécar — and sits inside restricted airspace (the R111 zone), so checking the day's airspace restrictions before flying is essential here, not optional. The takeoff itself is a clean, clear slope with room for two gliders to launch side by side, and top-landing is possible on days when thermals aren't punching straight through over launch. The site works across a wide arc from east through southwest. Landing takes real care: strong thermal activity surrounds the landing area, so the safer approach is to use the road to bleed off height and then follow it in — lift tends to sit on the left of the road and sink on the right, though that varies day to day, and low turns are a genuine hazard here. Landing on the beach is forbidden year-round. A specific hazard to know before flying: if the upper winds are blowing from the west, don't fly even if the surface wind is still coming up the slope — that combination often turns into a rough convergence that throws pilots around.

The landing area sees heavy thermal activity, so avoid low turns on approach.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Otivar, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Otivar with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
