Where it is

SoaringCross-country

Balleira Beach is a relatively new Isle of Man launch, first flown in 2017, from a grassy bowl on the north side of the beach car park — a clean waste-water outflow sits on the south side, so keep that in mind when setting up. It takes the same wind direction as nearby Glen Mooar but is noticeably easier to launch from successfully, with room for one glider at a time. Big wings can be inflated in wind as light as 8 mph, and even in gentle conditions, a 45-degree right turn lifts you gently up the sand cliffs and along the coast — north toward Orrisdale Head and Ballaugh Beach, or south all the way to Glen Mooar. The site works best in west-northwest wind, though W to NW is flyable too, with a bit more turbulence when the wind comes off at an angle. In a good, steady breeze, the full Peel run is a genuinely enjoyable flight, but much of the route has no bottom-landing options, so it suits pilots who are comfortable staying committed in the air. Less experienced pilots do better sticking to the shorter run north from Glen Wyllin to Ballaugh Beach and back, which keeps a landable beach in reach even at high tide.

Launch & conditions

Launch faces west-northwest, from a grassy bowl on the north side of the beach car park, recently extended. Be careful not to get pulled back over the bushes into the car park — inflate and walk your way as high as possible to give yourself the best chance of clearing the corner above the cliffs.

Local rules & hazards

A clean waste-water treatment outflow sits on the south side of the launch. The full Peel run has long stretches with no bottom-landing option, so it suits pilots comfortable staying committed in the air; less experienced pilots do better with the shorter run to Ballaugh Beach and back, which keeps a landable beach in reach even at high tide.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Balleira Beach, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Balleira Beach with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
