Where it is

SoaringCross-countryHike & fly

Peel Hill is a great coastal site on the Isle of Man — but it is not suitable for low-airtime pilots. The NW face was first flown (as far as anyone knows) in 2017 and works nicely in a NW wind of around 12 mph with takeoff just above the coastal path. Pilots should ideally have at least 50 hours post Club Pilot, be competent in ground-handling, and have recent flight currency, with the ability to quickly recognise diminishing lift and make timely, accurate and safe landing decisions. Do not use this site in light or marginal conditions.

Launch & conditions

NW face. Takeoff just above the coastal path — best in a NW wind of about 12 mph. Not suitable for pilots without recent currency and solid landing-decision skills. Do not use in light or marginal conditions.

Local rules & hazards

Site is unsuitable for inexperienced pilots — ideally 50+ hours post Club Pilot, competent ground-handling and recent flight currency. Must be able to recognise diminishing lift quickly and make timely, accurate, safe landing decisions. Do not fly in light or marginal conditions.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Peel Hill, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Peel Hill with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.

A day counts as flyable when the surface wind held in your range, from a direction the site flies, with no rain, for at least 2 hours in a row (08:00–20:00) — from hourly 10 m wind over the last 12 months. A seasonal wind guide only: it can't judge gusts, thermals or turbulence, and never replaces the live forecast, airspace checks and your own judgement.
