Where it is

Hike & fly

Tungareshwar is a quiet, lightly documented flying site close to Mumbai, India, offering around 15 minutes of flight time off a modest 626 m height difference. It's strictly a morning site, working on the northeast-to-southeast winds that build before the day heats up, and because the hillside is largely forested rather than open ridge, ridge lift is limited — most of what this site offers comes from that early window. Access is a two-stage affair: roughly 7 km of off-road driving gets a vehicle up to about 2,000 feet, after which it's a further 10-minute walk to a big but rocky takeoff area. The setting is remote and thickly forested, home to wildlife including wild cats, so flying here alone isn't recommended — go with someone who knows the area. Landing is flexible, with plenty of options within gliding range; picking a spot close to the road makes the walk out easier. As a newly documented, lightly explored site, expect what you find on the ground to differ from any single write-up.

Launch & conditions

Reaching the takeoff needs about 7 km of off-road driving to roughly 2,000 ft, then a further 10-minute walk. The takeoff area itself is large but rocky.

Getting there & local rules

The site sits about 60 km northwest of Mumbai airport. Drive the NH8 and turn off for Vajreshwari, then ask locally for Parol Phata — the dirt track to the top branches off about half a km before it.

Local rules & hazards

There's no formal flight restriction beyond common courtesy toward the forest and local community. Flying is a morning-only affair here, and the area is remote, forested and home to wild cats — flying without local support isn't advisable.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Tungareshwar, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Tungareshwar with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
