Where it is
Gavorrano launches from Monte Calvo, above the town of the same name on Italy's Tuscan coast, at 447 m with a takeoff pilots describe as genuinely easy — open ground with a view across the Gulf of Follonica to the island of Elba. Southwest, west and northwest winds work the site, though the wind that actually makes it fly is a reliable northwest gulf breeze, easy to read even without a local weather station; the safe window runs 15–25 km/h, and pilots stay grounded once gusts pass 30. In summer, that breeze tends to build toward sunset, so evening flights are the norm rather than the exception. Reaching the top is a proper hike — locals sometimes drive up in a 4x4, but walking the marked trail from the parking area near camping 'La Finoria' takes about 20 minutes and is considered the more rewarding way in. Landing is at Filare di Gavorrano, about 400 m below takeoff — long enough to suit hang gliders as well as paragliders — and top-landing back at the launch itself is also an option.
Launch & conditions
The takeoff is open and easy, with a view across the Gulf of Follonica to Elba. Top-landing back at launch is also possible.
Getting there & local rules
Head to Gavorrano and follow signs toward camping 'La Finoria'. Before the turn into the campsite, park at the gravel area on the right (opposite a restaurant) and follow the trail marked 'Monte Calvo' — about a 20-minute walk to the top.
Local rules & hazards
Fly when the northwest wind is blowing 15–25 km/h — that's the reliable gulf breeze here, easy to read even without a local weather station, but stay off the site once gusts pass 30 km/h. In summer, the site typically comes on at sunset.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Gavorrano, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Gavorrano with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
