Where it is
Monte Cairo (Monte Cassino) launches at about 703 m in Italy's Lazio region, on a big, smooth grass field that's suitable for beginners as well as more experienced pilots. The takeoff is a short three-minute walk through the forest from a parking spot on the Terelle road; there's no permanent shuttle up, but the site is popular with flying schools and tandem operators, so hitching a ride shouldn't be difficult. A classic route from here climbs the ridge to the right of takeoff up to the top of Monte Caira, then heads south for a spectacular pass over the historic Abbey of Monte Cassino before returning to land near takeoff - a good introduction to the local terrain on a day with southerly winds. Wind directions from east through south-east, south and south-west all work here, and it's flown for thermalling, ridge soaring, cross-country and flatland flying. Getting there from Rome or Naples means taking the A1 motorway, exiting at Cassino, and following the SS630 (which becomes the SS509) toward Caira, about 10 km past the motorway exit.
