Alto Lucero is a newer paragliding site near Xalapa, the capital of Mexico's Veracruz state, launching from around 1,060 m and quickly known for cross-country flying. Mornings and the hours before 3pm are when the XC potential is best; the evening brings a strong glass-off ('restitución') instead, good for a calmer, scenic flight as the day winds down. It's only flyable with east and northeast wind — anything else and the site simply doesn't work. Getting there is straightforward by road: about 40 minutes from Xalapa, 2.5 hours from Puebla, and 3 hours 40 minutes from Mexico City, following the highway toward Veracruz, exiting at Xalapa, then heading east-northeast toward Alto Lucero. Landing is at a field known locally as Los Huajes, less than 2 km from the mountain and visible right from takeoff — a small circular pond used to sit near the LZ as a landmark. One hazard worth knowing before you fly: a high-voltage power line runs about 4 km behind the mountain, so keep it firmly in mind when planning your flight path.

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Alto Lucero, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch.
