ThermalsSoaringHike & fly

Tulancingo is a windy hike-and-fly and soaring site in central Mexico, launching at about 2,409 m in northeast to east wind. Access to takeoff is good — walk up or drive a 4x4 — but conditions follow a clear daily pattern: back wind (wind blowing the wrong way for launch) persists until around 15:00, then it turns favourable and stays good until roughly 20:00. The site needs a steady, constant wind: when it's inconsistent, dust devils become a real risk, so pilots should be cautious on light or gusty days rather than pushing to fly. Landing is mostly a top-landing back near launch, with an alternative landing area near a gas station. Finding the site itself takes some local knowledge — the access route is not well signed, so asking locals for directions is the recommended approach. Time your flight for the afternoon-to-evening window and you'll catch this site at its best.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Tulancingo, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch.
