Where it is

Soaring

Boca Paila Dune is a beach and forest soaring site just south of Tulum, Mexico, right at sea level, flying with east and southeast wind. Take-off is from the beach past the Boca Paila Hotel, before you reach the National Park entrance. The main flying zone is a small dune, though hotel bungalows sit nearby, so pilots need to ask permission before flying there — this isn't open, unrestricted airspace. South of the dune, there's also the option to soar along the tree line above the forest. Getting there means driving the coast road south from Tulum toward the National Park; about 200 m past the Boca Paila Hotel, the road runs right along the ocean, and that stretch is the spot. Flying needs at least 20 km/h of wind to work the ridge lift here — lighter days won't produce enough soaring band. Landing is straightforward, right back down on the beach. With warm Caribbean coastline, dune and forest soaring options, and a beach landing, Boca Paila Dune is a distinctive low-altitude site for pilots visiting the Riviera Maya, provided they secure permission first.
