Where it is
Zaachila launches to the east above the town of the same name near Oaxaca, and is flyable in northeast, east and southeast wind. The meeting point is well known locally: a restaurant by the wood market in Zaachila town, from where the road leads out toward Santa Inés del Monte — about 2 km before that town, a turn-off leads in, and after a couple of junctions and roughly 400 m more you reach the takeoff. The wind direction matters more here than at most sites: with southeasterly wind, thermals tend to sit toward the left of launch and pilots stay clear of the area well behind it, where rotor forms; with northeasterly wind, the same pattern flips to the other side. Strong wind from the west is a no-fly signal. To the east, don't fly beyond the landmark known locally as Elefante Rosa — past it you're in controlled, restricted airport airspace. The official landing is a large field to the east along the approach road, on the left side and before the power lines; pilots with enough altitude to clear the power lines safely have more room to choose from.
Launch & conditions
Launch faces east and is flyable in NE, E and SE wind; the meeting point is a restaurant by the wood market in Zaachila town, from where a signed turn-off and a couple of junctions lead to the takeoff, about 400 m past the last turn.
Local rules & hazards
Wind direction changes where the hazards sit: with southeasterly wind, stay well clear of the area behind and to the side of launch, where rotor forms; with northeasterly wind the same risk flips to the other side. Don't fly if the wind is coming from the west. To the east, the limit is the landmark known locally as Elefante Rosa — beyond it you enter controlled, restricted airport airspace.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Zaachila, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Zaachila with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
