Where it is

ThermalsSoaringHike & fly

Talca–Pencahue launches from 560 m in Chile's Maule Region, with the takeoff best suited to south or southeast wind — for other directions, pilots typically shift position along the ridge to find a better angle. Getting to launch means following a road that descends the mountain and passes a second landing area, going through a few gates fitted with simple wire to keep livestock in; one gate near the start can be locked, so it's worth parking outside it or knowing who to contact if it's shut on the way back. Trucks do use this road, so folding in your mirrors is a good habit, and in dry conditions (May, for reference) a regular car manages fine without 4WD. Landing needs some homework before hiking up, since the area has plenty of electrical lines, fences and thorny bushes scattered around — one known safe spot is open grass with no wires or fences nearby (just avoid the thorny bushes), and another, more convenient because it's passed on the way up, sits close to a roadside power line and a field of curious horses, so packing up quickly there matters.

Getting there & local rules
