Where it is

Cross-country

Monte Maccione launches from the flank of Punta Corrasi above Oliena, in Sardinia's Nuoro province, with an easy north-west-facing takeoff and about 600 m of height to play with down to the several fields that serve as landing next to the village. The flight tracks along a 10 km limestone ridge that runs north-west from Oliena toward Sardinia's east coast and south-west toward the mountains around Orgosolo, giving pilots a genuinely scenic line over one of the island's best-known massifs rather than a simple sled ride. The takeoff itself is straightforward, which makes the site a comfortable introduction to Sardinian mountain flying, though the terrain below still calls for confident route-reading given the ridge's length and the exposed ground it crosses. Getting there is easy to navigate: signs from Oliena point the way to Monte Maccione and to a hotel roughly 2 km before the takeoff, where a restaurant, pizzeria, campsite and a local trekking and outdoor-activities operation cluster together, making it a workable base for a longer visit.

North-west-facing takeoff, described as easy — comfortable for pilots stepping up to Sardinian mountain flying.

Getting there & local rules

Follow the signs from Oliena toward Monte Maccione; a hotel with a restaurant, pizzeria and campsite sits on the same road about 2 km before the takeoff, and there's a local trekking and outdoor-activities operation nearby.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Monte Maccione, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Monte Maccione with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
