Where it is
Monte Ortobene launches at 894 m right on the edge of Nuoro's outskirts in Sardinia, reached from town via a well-paved road that keeps the approach genuinely convenient for a mountain site. The take-off sits just off the road itself, among bushes, a short distance past a roadside restaurant landmark. This is a thermal flight rather than a soaring site, and it's best avoided when the synoptic wind is blowing strongly — the site needs settled conditions to work well rather than a windy day. Wind from the south-east or south is what the site catches. Landing is generously sized, giving plenty of room for the approach, though it does get a little turbulent during the hottest hours of a summer afternoon, when the day's heating peaks. Being so close to Nuoro and easy to drive to, Monte Ortobene is a convenient thermal option for local pilots — best flown outside the strongest summer midday heat and on genuinely light synoptic wind days.

Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Monte Ortobene, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch.
