Where it is
Portoscuso launches at just 80 m on Sardinia's south-west coast, in the Carbonia-Iglesias area, a low but technical site built around soaring roughly 3 km of sea cliffs. The north-west-facing take-off is rated as technical, with a steep, near-vertical slope that becomes genuinely difficult once the wind is strong — this is not a forgiving launch when conditions pick up. Once airborne, though, locals describe the soaring here as remarkably easy, with pilots able to stay up along the cliff line for hours, working the lift right through until dusk. The only landing option is a top landing back near launch, with no bottom landing available given the site's small 50 m top-to-bottom height range. That combination — a demanding, wind-sensitive launch paired with hours of easy soaring once you're established — makes Portoscuso a site where the entry price is higher than the flying itself, so respecting the launch's difficulty in stronger wind matters more than technique once airborne.

Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Portoscuso, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Portoscuso with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
