Where it is
Huimilpan is a high-altitude thermal and cross-country site in Querétaro, Mexico, launching from around 2,650 meters and facing west to northwest. It's a versatile site — pilots come here for thermic XC flying, ridge soaring, flatland-style flying, and hike-and-fly options, which makes it worth the drive for more than one type of day. Getting to launch takes some commitment: the road is rough enough that a 4x4 truck with high clearance is the realistic way up, and even a regular car will likely mean hiking the final stretch on foot rather than driving all the way to takeoff. The road crosses grazing land, so close every gate behind you as you go — leaving one open lets livestock wander off, and that's the kind of thing that costs a site its access if pilots aren't careful. Once you're set up at 2,650 meters with a W/NW-facing launch, the altitude and orientation give a solid window for building thermals through the day. Plan for a rugged approach and you'll be rewarded with a proper mountain XC launch.
Launch & conditions
Launch is around 2,650 m, facing west to northwest — well suited to thermic XC and ridge soaring.
Getting there & local rules
The road up needs a 4x4 with high clearance; a regular car usually means hiking the final stretch. Close every gate behind you — the road crosses grazing land and open gates let livestock escape.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Huimilpan, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Huimilpan with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
