Where it is

ThermalsSoaringCross-countryHike & fly

La Jolla launches at 2,625 m in Queretaro state, central Mexico, and flies with wind from the southeast through south and southwest to west, good for evening ridge soaring as well as cross-country flights. This is an experienced pilot's site: the short hike to launch ends at a barely improved patch cleared by local pilots rather than a manicured takeoff, and the site itself is openly described as unfriendly to novice pilots. To get there, follow the road toward the Joya-La Barreta recreational park, continuing on a cobblestone stretch until a pond appears on the left with grass parking on the right; from there it's a hike partway up the mountain, starting across from the pond. Conditions are typically flyable in the dry season, which falls in winter, making that the most reliable window for a flight. Whenever you visit, pack out everything you bring: the local flying community asks pilots to respect residents and never leave trash or plastic bottles behind.

Launch & conditions

Takeoff is a barely improved patch cleared by local pilots, partway up the mountain from the parking area. This is not a beginner-friendly launch, so come with solid ground-handling and launch technique.

Getting there & local rules

Follow the road toward the Joya-La Barreta recreational park, continuing on the cobblestone stretch until you see a pond on the left and grass parking on the right; launch is reached by hiking partway up the mountain from there.

Local rules & hazards

Respect local residents and pack out all trash, including plastic bottles. The site is typically flyable during the dry season, in winter.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to La Jolla, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open La Jolla with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
