Where it is

ThermalsCross-country

Seefeld launches from 2,053 m in the Austrian Alps, with a takeoff open to south, southwest and west winds — three directions that keep this exposure workable through a typical mountain day. Pilots come here mainly for thermal flying and cross-country attempts, and the wide directional spread makes it easier to find a flyable window than at sites with a single narrow one. The official landing is Krachele Moos, but locals also use several backup fields depending on the season: in summer, the area near the Olympic Stadium and tennis courts, or the village center close to the Euro Spar supermarket, both work. In winter, the golf club opens as a landing option — but only when its wind sock is flying large and clearly visible; if it isn't, look elsewhere, since a soft or absent sock signals conditions the club doesn't consider safe that day. Pick your landing to match the day's wind rather than defaulting to habit, and check current conditions with local pilots before your first flight here.

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Seefeld, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Seefeld with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
