Where it is

Seegrube sits above Innsbruck at about 1,898 m, with a southeast-to-southwest wind window and landing at Absam. Access is straightforward: from Innsbruck's city centre, take the Hungerburgbahn funicular, then change to the Nordkettenbahn cable car up to the launch — no hike required. The airspace here, though, is genuinely one of the trickiest in the Alps: this is an extremely sensitive area because of its proximity to Innsbruck Airport (LOWI), and the site sits inside controlled airspace (a CTR), so understanding the local airspace structure before you fly is not optional. Weather brings its own hazard too — foehn wind is a real factor at Seegrube, and foehn conditions can turn a pleasant flying day dangerous fast, with strong, gusty and unpredictable air. This is a site for pilots who already understand Alpine airspace and foehn risk, not one to learn either lesson on.

Local rules & hazards

This is an extremely airspace-sensitive area due to its proximity to Innsbruck Airport (LOWI) — the site sits inside controlled airspace (CTR), so know the local airspace structure before flying. Foehn wind is a real hazard here.

Check conditions before you fly
